It's odd that they can burn everything from methane to bunker oil but diesel is off limits.

No, but JD uses the stage 1 of refinement to generate the Heavy & medium oil to then send those to the boilers to generate steam - but it would be a good idea to have something to burn heavy (it will just be very polluting...)
