The loose storage should be capable of storing mixed elements.
For example, trucks and U-shaped conveyor belts should be able to deposit any kind of material into it, even if it's all mixed together, as long as it can be sorted later.
Let’s say there is a mine—then the mined products could be dumped into several large loose storages, and later sorted out using an ore sorter.
That’s why it would also be useful if the ore sorter was always available, not just when it’s specifically enabled.

I would like to expand on this idea and suggest that there are ore sorters that trains can access also to perform this function of hauling the mixed elements from one location to a potential centralized sorting location.

suggested this when trains came out, having bulk generic storage and conveyor inputs to large ore sorters (to balance it trucks can deliver to generic storages but cannot pick up from them requiring belt input to either trains with a generic bulk module or directly to an ore sorter). they would not replace specific loose storage but become an addition to the logistics arm for trains which would help on maps like dragon tail.
