currently, you can use balancers with their (very limited) "strictly enforce even input" and "strictly enforce even outputs" to build small logic cells to stop belts from clogging up and using underutilised belts more efficiently. This is nice, and I have used this for chip making with a single chip maker, as well as providing small subfactories with all required materials on a single belt. The issue is, that this cannot be done when an input is of a different belt type. there is no way to control the flow of loose material when the output of the chain goes on a flat belt. Case in point: smelting ores into steel and copper. I wanted to make a small maintenance plant that recieves graphite, ore, sand and limestone, and cycles between steel and copper smelting. For processes that only use flat belts, this can be done by using filters and routing output through a strictly enforced input balancer, requesting a resource. I want a balancer that can act on the throughput of a different type.

I upvote this because I have felt the same need.
For your particular build, you can bridge the gap between flat and loose by using a shredder/compactor and some waste or scrap.
