When excavators are selecting theirs next target they consider only distance to mining control tower, resulting in a lot of movement when bigger area is selected. They should more prioritize theirs own distance to target too, so they should continue mining near targets rather then moving big distance to start in different part of mining area. That should also allow some partial manual control through manual movement near wanted part to be mined next.
Excavators should consider distance to target
Due to the current behaviour, it's really hard to prepare detailed terraforming work without having to set up more towers or having to come back to it once prerequisit chunks are completed. Although, this could make behaviour less predictable, the current behaviour isn't very intuitive either. Trucks do available closeby jobs from what I figured but excavators don't.
I absolutely agree. The effective result is that you get more utility out of micromanaging your projects doing little areas piece by piece and I don't imagine that's intended.
The moving back and forth from corner to corner thing is particularly problematic with the really big Mega Excavators. They dig fast, but they move *very* slowly, so if they waste a huge amount of time on pointless movement, a dig project, such as removing a shallow surface layer of a large area, will take several times longer than it ought to. At first it's fine but then as only the corners are left it becomes silly inefficient.
