One of the biggest strategic options I expected trains to facilitate, which would both add depth to the game and boost the value of trains themsevles, is localization - production of raw materials into more refined product close to their source, utilizing local resources and compressing items down before shipping to reduce transport volume.
However, if an outpost needs to import inputs that can come from both recycling/byproduct & virgin production (like Graphite), or produces byproducts that needs to be exported elsewhere with priority over virgin production. We currently have no way to implement such prioritization from within the Train Schedule.
To implement such flow control using tools currently available, we need to build multiple stations at the same site and create multiple lines for the same product, which could be avoided if we could simply re-order stations in a Station Group to assign them priority.
We NEED the ability to re-order train stations by priority within Station Groups
Most production chains begin w/ some form of smelting, which, in the late game, nearly always means using Arc Furnaces & exhaust scrubbing. Achieving optimal flow control for Graphite & Sulfur between sites that both prioritizes byproducts over virgin sources and minimizes needless travel distance is currently unreasonably difficult/complex/costly to achieve. This might seem like a very specific issue, but
1) it is not the only situtaiton this can happen, and
2) most chains begin with smelting, so if we cannot localize the first step we cannot localize at all.
I have no idea why it was decided that trains would always pick the closest station in a station group instead of following player choice. It seems like restrictively rigid behavior that takes away player agency in an area of the game where player agency would probably be needed to realize its depth.
The Station Groups themselves already have grab-bars that allows us to re-order them. Why not add grab-bars to the stations within Station Groups too? So we can re-order them by priority?
The image from the last comment shows what I mean by "grab bars"
