Favourites! Oh my favourites!

I suggest adding the ability to "favourite" a building. There would be a new top-left panel - along side alarms, messages, & research - where the said building's icon would be appear. Hover over the icon to see the building name. Click to zoom the camera to the building. Shift or control click to open the building's control window. This would greatly speed up moving around the map and making changes to often-accessed buildings.
The panel could have sort-by-type and sort-by-name options. If both options are on then sort first by-type then by-name. If both are off let the user manually reorder as required.
A nice touch would a few decorative buildings, such as a small monument or flag pole, so the user could place them in areas of interest to zoom the camera.
