The months of food left in food markets in the top bar is not very useful. First, by the mid-game the amount of food held in food markets is rather low compared to consumption and the number does not reflect storages which the player can set alerts up for anyway. Second, it is hard to tell by that number alone, if the food stocks are holding steady or not, since the player does not know by a glance whether the current number is the max for the food markets or not.
Showing a percentage of how full all assigned food types are in all food markets is much more useful. The player knows that 100%(or close to if not supplied by belts) means that all markets are full and well supplied while anything less means that consumption is out pacing supply and some markets are undersupplied. Thus the player gets much more immediate feedback that something is not right with the food situation and needs attention.
A tooltip or setting can still be used to convey food months left.
Show food left in settlement as a percentage instead of months left.

But just if the percentage isn’t a addional indicator.
