I think hostile forces could become a much more meaningful part of Captain of Industry.
Once the player has a stable industrial base, most threats come from shortages, logistics problems, pollution or poor planning. It would be interesting to also have optional external threats that can directly endanger the infrastructure we spend so much time building.
Pirates could launch attacks after being discovered, such as drone raids on ports, oil terminals, power plants or warehouses, landing parties attacking coastal facilities, small boats attacking ships or docks, and larger raids that continue until the responsible pirate fleet is destroyed.
Players could respond with coastal guns, anti-air or anti-drone defenses, radar, bunkers, patrol boats and ground security units.
Ammunition production and supply for defensive structures and military units should also be part of the system.
I think defense would fit Captain of Industry especially well if it became another industrial and logistical problem for the player to solve.
Defenses could require ammunition, fuel, electricity, spare parts, maintenance and personnel. Patrol boats and military units could also need fuel and supplies.
Some defensive or military units could be directly controlled when needed, while also being able to operate automatically during routine situations.
However, this entire system should be optional. Players should be able to enable a Peaceful Mode when starting a new game, completely disabling hostile raids and invasions.
There could also be Peaceful, Normal and Dangerous hostility levels.
This would let players who prefer peaceful factory building keep that experience, while giving others more danger, pressure and reasons to defend the industrial base they have built.

World Map & Ships
Bro, that's such a fun idea, crazy that I've never thought of it before when I was looking at the battleship.
However, one could consider adding ammunition production to load the ship before sending it into battle or out to explore.
After all, if ammunition doesn’t exist, what exactly is the ship supposed to fire?
