fully overhaul how ships work to be similar to trains and more realistic
(sorry if poor wording im bad at convoying ideas)
with this rework you would only get two cargo ships (one small fluid and one small universal) from the world but a new drydock would allow you to build ships like trains.
ships modules (7 on small, 9 on medium, 11 on large).
each ship size starts as an empty hull but can be filled with the following modules (placement limits mentioned as needed).
modules are split into three types below deck, above deck, and in deck (i cant think of a better name right now).
engine (below deck module/only in stern slot/mandatory).
bridge (above deck/mandatory).
fluid module I (in deck/takes 1 module slots).
fluid module II (in deck/takes 2 module slots)
bulk/loose module I (in deck/takes 1 module slots)
bulk/loose module II (in deck/takes 2 module slots)
container/unit I (in deck/takes 1 module slots)
container/unit II (in deck/takes 2 module slots)
universal I (in deck/takes 1 module slots)
universal II (in deck/takes 2 module slots)
this system would also replace how the main ship is upgraded/repaired (and possibly give it escorts so we can have real fleet battles with a poetical RTS mode for those who find the current battle system boring) but this would mean that the "shipyard" we currently have would be replaced with a main ship pier (that would be expandable for the escorts if they become a thing).
the shipyard would cost about 1.5 what the current shipyard costs but replace the construction parts I with construction parts II (ill let people who are better at balancing stuff decide that).
another thing is adding contracts for credits that are less efficient (ensure that battering is always better when available) that the current battering trades but are more flexible (they would exist together). the reason i want this is because it would give more opportunities to trade with other settlements
i ran out of space for a proper conclusion.
