Sorter is one-way but cannot connect to the balancer.
It should be made connectable, just like a vertical lift.
This should also apply to all buildings that have direction.

They shouldn't be connected. Why do you need to balance mixed products? You don't know how much of a specific product will go to each output. First sort and then put balancers on each clean product.
@poltime the concept is still valid: for all pipes/belts that have a specified direction, they should be able to be plugged into a balancer -- for without the knowledge of its direction, it's impossible to know which way it flows (like connecting a connector to a cargo depot module -- it's unclear if it's flowing out or in)
The whole thing of not being able to connect a balancer certain ports just because the balancer might not know whether it's an input or an output just feels like a temporary workaround that should be fixed to allow more compact and elegant designs with balancers.
Agree with OP. Ofc there may be the need to balance mixed products, like ores and microchip intermediates.
