I'm running into a similar issue, my camera will only rotate via MMB or Alt-LMB when the cursor is at the edge of the screen. Tested with the same proton versions, as well as proton-cachyos both with and without the wayland driver. Also tried a save on v0.7.6a and it works as expected with all the above setups (I know that version isn't the same as the original ticket, but maybe both these issues have the same root cause?).

Still an issue in 0.7.9. In fullscreen, borderless, and windowed mode running under proton the cursor icon changes but the camera only rotates by one degree and then stops unless the mouse is at the very edge of the screen.

A couple of people with X11 seemed to report no issues, so it might be wayland-specific. I'm using hyprland.

I did find a workaround, tabbing out while holding down the middle mouse button seems to fix the problem until the next time you tab out without holding it down.

Unchecking "confine mouse cursor" seemingly "fixes" the issue (at least for me),
running game version v0.7.9 (b495) on wayland + hyprland.

Did not fix it for me. Wayland, but COSMIC as desktop/wm, version v0.7.9a.

Note: This is not a permanent issue. Rebooting fixes it, and I have not found a reliable way to reproduce this.

The "Alt+Tab" trick works for Hyprland - You have to load/create a map, than switch to another workspace and switch back to the game. In my case it was essential to release all shortcut keys between switches (my case Super + Number). If I keep pushing Super while switching the camera stays in "one-degree-lock".

I can confirm this on Linux as well.

Details:

  • Distro: CachyOS
  • Session: Wayland
  • Desktop: Hyprland
  • Proton: Hotfix
  • Display mode: borderless and fullscreen tested
  • Reproduces on: both

Behavior:

  • Pressing MMB shows the free camera icon.
  • The camera rotates only by a few pixels and then gets stuck.
  • Alt+Tab restores it only temporarily.
  • The issue seems to reappear after opening in-game dialogue / popup windows.

This may be related to mouse capture or focus being lost after UI dialogs.

Holding middle mouse -> Alt-tabbing seems to be a workaround on PopOS in borderless for me. Seems to persist until the game gets rebooted. I do have mouse confinement turned off in game as well.

Had this bug as well. Installing gamescope and adding gamescope -W 2560 -H 1440 -r 165 -- %command% to the launch options fixes the issue, but I'd rather not rely on external tools for it to work.

I can confirm that adding 'gamscope -'your res' --%command%' fix the mouse on CachyOS Wayland session.
thank you

I am experiencing the exact same issue. Running Arch Linux, Wayland and Hyprland. When I logout and switch to KDE Plasma the issue disappears. Seems to be related to the combination of Wayland and Hyprland.

Same issue for me on Omarchy (Arch + Hyprland). Tested on v0.8.6a of the game. Unlike others, no combination of window mode, "confine mouse cursor", or Alt+Tab tricks work.

Some observations in case it helps:

  • Panning via holding RMB works just fine
  • If I move the mouse veeeeery slowly, taking care to only move it in tiny increments at a time, then I can get tilt/rotate to work, but as soon as I speed up just a little bit it freezes.
  • Moving the mouse to the edges of the screen with MMB/Alt + LMB down does cause it to work a bit better. With edge scrolling enabled, it also pans the camera, which is frustrating. Turning that off makes it somewhat more reliable and usable, but still not ideal.

For those stuck with this issue, consider upvoting this suggestion to allow tilting the camera via keyboard controls (right now you can only rotate). I would like to see this issue fixed properly, but having a keyboard alternative would at least make the game more playable in the meantime.
