Issue description

I start the game, load my save file and after an unspecified amount of time in my save(seconds, minutes, rarely hours), the game closes to desktop, though music keeps playing and the cursor remains the ingame version, even responding to ingame UI elements, any attempt to ALT+TAB back into the game is ended with a small box labeled Captain Of Industry - Unity 6000.0.66f1_e7adf66625be with a progress bar, which starts and ends at 1/5 the length of the bar, and closes down with the game.

Reproduction steps

  1. Load savegame.
  2. Do anything with the UI, start the simulation, interact with elements, or do nothing.
  3. Eventually I get a brief black screen, crash to desktop, though the music keeps playing and the cursor remains the ingame version, responding to ingame elements, and not to desktop elements, the game is ended with a small box labeled Captain Of Industry - Unity 6000.0.66f1_e7adf66625be with a progress bar, which starts and ends at 1/5 the length of the bar, and closes down with the game.

Game version and build number

v0.8.1a b550

Operating system

Windows

d3d11: failed to create staging 2D texture w=128 h=2 d3dfmt=10 [887a0005]

This error (887a0005) stands for DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED. Simply put: the video driver "crashed" or the video card physically stopped responding to the engine at the time of texture creation.

Switch to DirectX 12 Unity 6 works much more stable with modern APIs. Try to force a mode change: On Steam, right-click on the game -> Properties. In the Launch Options field, enter: -force-d3d12 Try to launch the game.

Disable "Full Screen Optimization" This is a known problem between Unity and Windows.: Find the file CaptainOfIndustry.exe in the folder with the game. Right-click -> Properties -> Compatibility tab. Check the box "Disable full-screen optimizations". Click "Apply".

FPS limitation (V-Sync) In Captain of Industry, the GPU load becomes intermittent in the later stages of the game (large base). Sudden jumps in loading up to 100% can cause the driver to crash. In the game settings, turn on Vertical Sync (V-Sync) or limit FPS to 60. This stabilizes the power consumption of the graphics card.

Staging Texture error (Unity specifics) The error of creating a 128x2 texture is often associated with landscape or water shaders. Try lowering the Texture Quality and Shadows settings by one step. This will free up the video memory needed to create staging textures.

Sometimes the error is triggered by Discord, Steam Overlay, MSI Afterburner, or screen recording. Disable all in-game overlays. Power Shortage or TDR (Timeout Detection and Recovery) Windows considers that the graphics card is "stuck" because it did not respond in time, and forcibly restarts the driver. What to do: Change the registry settings to give the graphics card more time to "respond": Press Win+R, enter regedit. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDrivers. Create a DWORD parameter (32 bits) with the name TdrDelay and the value 10 (in decimal). Restart your PC.

Driver conflict The driver could have been "crookedly" updated or damaged. What to do: Remove the current driver via DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller) and install the latest stable version from the manufacturer's website.

Overclocking (OC) or overheating
The most common reason. Even factory overclocking may be unstable in a particular game.
What to do: If the graphics card is overclocked, return the frequencies to default. Try the "Debug Mode" in the NVIDIA Control Panel (Help section) to temporarily reset the factory overclocking.

I should probably clarify, that I already tried some of the fixes listed here. I already tried to force dx12, which resulted in an error message when trying to load any savegame or create a new game. The game is already limited to 60fps, and while I used to be able to play the game with high graphics settings without Issue, currently everything is set to either medium or low. additionally all overlays have been disabled, and I have removed and clean installed all my drivers, and the game itself.
To my mind this is a Unity problem, but I will try the other fixes when I get the time.

If it was an engine issue, there would already be dozens of messages here.

Sorry, I meant a Unity problem with my setup. I am basing this hypothesis on 2 other previously stable Unity based games displaying similar issues.

Which Windows build is installed?

ndbattlehunter-lab [github] · 7 months ago

I can't remember the exact version of the top of my head, but its win10, I will come back to you with the exact version when Im on my own computer.

but its win10

Windows 10 is outdated, in order not to have problems, I strongly recommend upgrading to 11.

Well turns out because my cpu is an i7-7700k, upgrading isnt that straight forward, so to get Captain of Industry working, it looks like I will need to get a new CPU, which means I need a new motherboard, and probably a new power supply and cabinet. But after that's done, I should be able to upgrade to Win11, so hopefully that will stabilize Captain of Industry

Try this:
Disable full-screen optimization: Right-click on the .exe file of the game -> Properties -> Compatibility -> Check the box "Disable full-screen optimization".
Use the window mode without borders: In the game settings, select Windowed Borderless.

Success! I am now up to an average of 12 minutes before each crash, the combination of lowering graphics to the bare minimum and the above tip seems to have worked.

The reason is the graphics card, I recommend updating it.
The "3.5GB + 0.5 GB" video memory problem
The GTX 970's video memory is divided into two segments: 3.5 GB of fast memory and 0.5 GB of very slow memory.
How it affects: Modern games running on the Unity 6000 engine (like Captain of Industry) actively use video memory for textures and geometry. As soon as the game tries to take up more than 3.5 GB, it runs into a "slow tail" of memory.
The result: There is a sharp drop in data transfer speed, the Unity engine does not have time to receive a response from the video card and crashes with a memory access error (6000.0.66f1...).
Outdated architecture (Maxwell)
The architecture of the GTX 970 chip (released in 2014) does not fully support the modern DirectX 12 Agility SDK instructions and advanced memory management methods that are embedded in the new version of Unity.
Minimal settings disable heavy shaders and lighting effects, which allows the game to "fit" into the safe 3 GB of video memory.
Drivers (Legacy status)
NVIDIA has switched the 900 Series to limited support mode. New optimizations for the latest versions of Unity for this map are no longer being written.
What can you do to play not only at the "minimum"?
Frame rate limit (FPS Lock):
In the game settings or in the NVIDIA control panel, limit the FPS to 30 or 40. This will reduce the load on the graphics card's memory controller and may prevent crashes.
Increasing the Pagefile:
Make sure that the swap file is in system-selected mode on Windows and is located on the SSD. Unity uses it as a "spare" video memory.
User settings (Custom):
Instead of the preset "Low", try to set:
Texture Quality: Medium (but not High!).
Shadows: Low or Off (shadows consume the most memory).
Anti-Aliasing: Off.
Anisotropic Filtering: Off.

I have already decided to replace my PC, but a new gaming PC is not cheap. So I will be trying to make it work on my existing setup until I can afford the upgrade.
