Issue description

hi my late game has only 11fps on the lowest settings.
can you give me any suggestions on the problem
my pc components are:
amd ryzen 5 5500
32 gb ram 3200mhz
amd radeon rx 9060 xt 12gb
500gb nvme
1tb nvme

Reproduction steps

  1. load game save
  2. unpause game
  3. start to drop to 11~15fps max

Game version and build number

v0.8.2.c

Operating system

Windows

Look at the CPU and graphics card load. How many trucks do you have?

bernas00001 [github] · 6 months ago

250 medium trucks
60 giant excavetors
250 haul trucks
gpu around 24 to 32 percent

Why is it crossed out? CPU only 17%? Open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc).
Go to the Performance tab. Click on CPU. Right-click the big graph. Select "Change graph to" -> "Logical processors". Take a screenshot during the load and paste it here.

The screenshot shows the GPU, read carefully what I wrote.

The further I play, the worse it's been getting. I noticed it was a bit laggier than before early into this update, but am happy with 60-100 FPS so continued on

Since i built automated assemblyX8 area for everything in the red science tier, it's starting to get much worse, causing stutters when moving camera that result in scroll lag, even affecting the game's music/ sounds to cackle. so like 30 FPS, even on lowest preset, or worse. 50 if game is paused, zoomed in, and camera not moving.

I'm starting to regret decorating everything with custom surface and paint, I'm probably losing 30+ FPS just to that.

After the other night's session, my Laptop's Battery Brick was hot enough to cook an egg on.

Running Nvidia 4070 laptop, 14900HX i9 intel
and a desktop with Nvidia 4060 16GB, 5700X ryzen CPU

GPU usage is easily at 90+% always, CPU usage is like 30-50% on both machines.

CPU usage is like 30-50% on both machines.

This is the average CPU load, you need to look at the load of the core (thread). As we can see in the screenshot, performance is limited due to the CPU. Slow RAM (3200) also contributes. The reason we see 80–90% instead of a solid 100% is that Windows quickly swaps the main game thread between different cores (hundreds of times per second) to prevent a single spot on the chip from overheating. Task Manager averages these values, making it look like several cores are "busy", even though at any microsecond, one core is completely choked at its limit. The core shows 90% usage rather than 100% because the remaining 10% of the time it is stalled - waiting for data from your RAM. The CPU sends a request: "Where is Truck №123 right now?" During those 10+ nanoseconds of latency, the core cannot do any work. Task Manager sees this as the core "not being busy," even though the game logic is stuck waiting. Your Ryzen 5 5500 is doing its best, but its architecture (small L3 cache and memory latency) is preventing it from processing the game logic any faster.
Simplify the logistics (remove trucks, use straight belts, cancel massive terraforming tasks). A Ryzen 7 5700X3D would solve this. Its massive cache turns those "memory stalls" into active work, likely doubling your FPS on the exact same save file. Trucks and paths: This is the main "devourer" of resources. If you have hundreds of trucks driving on complex routes across the entire map, the processor is going crazy. Replace them with conveyors wherever possible. Logistics optimization: Try to build productions in closed loops next to each other in order to reduce the length of the search paths (pathfinding).
Textures and shadows: Although the focus is on the processor, the RX 9060 XT graphics card can "wait" for data from the CPU. Reducing Shadows and disabling clouds in settings often helps the processor to produce frames a little faster. Check whether your memory is actually running at 3200 MHz. This is critically important for Ryzen. If it runs at the 2133/2400 MHz, you lose about 15-20% of CPU performance. Enable PBO (Precision Boost Overdrive) in the BIOS (or via Ryzen Master). It will allow the processor to keep high frequencies under load a little longer. Set the game's priority to "High" in the Task Manager. Close all background programs and disable unnecessary Windows services. The larger your factory is, the more powerful the CPU is required. For such simulators, Ryzen will be ideal with an increased cache of up to 96 MB and maximum performance per 1 core (thread) (X3D models) and for intel CPU DDR5 RAM is desirable with the highest possible frequency. Multithreaded performance is useless here.

Trucks and paths:

Thanks for all the info, and yeah it makes alot of sense, I've been intentionally letting my trucks do a alot more than I normally would this playthrough, running mats for the highest tier stuff instead of automating, dumping instead of belting, and the map is just so insanely large. just last night during the worse lag I had 50 assigned trucks just dedicated to taking rocks very far away. I bet this wrecked my CPU lol I plan to automate more was just busy rebuilding newest tier stuff to be automated as well. I'll work on getting this belted and reduce truck usage and see how it goes.

Thanks for windows tips, bios and speeds are all set and not default speeds for ram but ill check if its high priority on task manager while I focus automation and reduce length of trips.

Someday I'll make the jump to ddr5 motherboard on my desktop. Buy ram prices are rough right now so we'll have to make due. my 14900k laptop handle game bit better but it unfortunately does not have 15 internal fans so it gets a bit toastier than I prefer to run games at for 5+ hour sessions

Thanks again!

Gaming laptops are evil. They put a power supply in the kit that does not pull the CPU + GPU under load. Did you know that if the battery in your laptop swells and you take it out, your 14900HX + 4070 laptop will run out of power and fps will decrease? Did you notice during the games that the battery was running out a little?

Did you notice during the games that the battery was running out a little?

Never that I noticed,.. yet, only 1.5 years old. however I typically wouldn't even look to see since I only ever used it while plugged in, from what I recall, I've always seen 100% battery

However, most non simulation games typically don't pull as much power.

Also I have a slight undervolt setup for the 14900 along with micro code updates since it has had widespread issues, I weaken the processor just enough that it won't go over about 88 degrees, otherwise it would happily run at 95 on most game just to push , usually, non noticeable amount of extra fps. I prefer my devices to run colder, when possible and settings allow. I've seen too many gaming laptops die to heat.

The slowdown comes from the number of trucks: close to 600, far above the regular limit, which is only possible with mods or cheats, and pathfinding for that many vehicles saturates one CPU core. Keeping the fleet within the normal limit avoids it.
