Make Auto-Balance in Turbines configurable

Power & Energy

The big Problem with turbines and flywheels are, that independent how much flywheels you build the efficiency goes down for the generator when the autobalance needs to activate.

the big problem is, that the point where the "turbine kicks in" in auto-balance is the same point of the efficency of the generator.

A good solution would be that we can configure at how much MW of the shaft we can "kick in" the turbine.

I would prefer a predictive model that looks at the current draw and starts the turbines when x seconds of energy remain rather than x MW or x% of the energy.

i think manually configurable would be better. I'd like to turn an extra autobalance turbine on below 60%, 50% and 40% to minimize how much each turbine starts/stops, and spend more time at 100% efficiency

Time based would be awesome.
Would also make it intuitive how many flywheels to use.

Sounds like you should just turn off auto-balance on one or two turbines and let it run all the time.

i do, but power fluctuations happen

especially with solar involved

I'm more a fan of the setting that you can choose on how much MW you can kick in the turbine.

I mean the UI elements are already there (same as the storage ones).

I would say manual of some sort, whether “time remaining” or “energy remaining”.
As it is, I generally don’t use it much except on my very lowest priority generators.

I feel like this is an intentional choice by the devs to make power generation a little bit finicky and difficult to balance. intentional instability

I don't think it should be possible tochange too much

however, it does suck to have power shortages for 2 seconds because your base ramped power demand too fast (mostly from arc furnaces switching). This is possible even with only 1 out of 4 high pressure turbines set to autobalance. I think a nice compromise would be if it were tied to the number of flywheels. Each flywheel connected to the shaft allows you to adjust it by 2%, aka allowing the shaft to ramp fast.

Another option would be to have some "smart" sensing of when to turn the autobalanced turbines on - rather than relying on a set threshold there is also "rate of change" which is considered. The faster the shaft power is dropping, the earlier the autobalance threshold is triggered.

unless you needlessly waste power by running at 100% without autobalance, no it does not

the source of the steam is not relevant
