Panning during rain stutters heavily

Fixed Graphics Performance
RealisticOptimist · 7 months ago

Panning while raining is terribly jumpy for me. Despite getting over 60fps (when Vsync disabled) when zoomed out, panning itself is more like 3-5 fps.
Even when zoomed in, with like 160fps, panning is terribly stuttering several times a second. Feels like when chunks of rain need to be added, panning gets stopped.
It's all smooth when it's not raining.
This is not really new with U4, but possibly got worse/stands out more now.
Radeon RX 6800 XT.

Could you post a video of this issue? This sound like some GPU/driver/Unity issue, I am not sure what could we do about this. If it is caused by the rain particles, we could add an option to disable them.

Anyone else is experiencing similar issues?

Ok, now. I went back to a save, where I observed it the most.
It does not seem to occur over water/ flat land. Indicating it could be related to the map relief.
I used wasd for panning. Fog was disabled in this case, but seems not relevant.

I like the rain ... and it's not really a bad problem for me, just annoying.

I noticed it too, through I used a mod to get x15 game speed. This seems to have created a CPU bottleneck issue, which is way more visible during rain. It's not really a bug report that the CPU can't run the game faster than the unmodded game will run, but it's still an observation worth mentioning. It seems to be an edge case to trigger this, but when it happens, it quickly becomes annoying.
I highly suspect this to be CPU rather than GPU related as it seems to be affected by game speed and it still triggers with around 75% GPU load. CPU load was 35%, which on an 8 core CPU could indicate a main thread bottleneck.

I managed to trigger this while the game was paused, so apparently it's not exclusively related to game speed 🤔

I did some more testing to investigate this problem. Average frame rate goes down a little but while panning (like loss of around 10 fps) while the low 1% completely tanks. Interestingly when not panning, the low 1% is around 75 fps. I used the COI:Extended tweaks mod to disable weather rendering and the frame rate went back to normal with no stuttering and low 1% in the 70s. There is something with rendering the rain drops, which conflicts with panning. Not every frame, but sometimes there is a super slow frame and it shows. This is one of those cases where low 1% (or low 0.1% if you can get it) works much better than average for detecting stuttering.

Interestingly if I set the speed to the slowest, then low 1% will be 55-60 fps while panning. This is despite both high and low speed tests are done while paused. Apparently rendering isn't the same for all speeds of pause.

Thank you for investigating this a bit more in depth! Confirms there is indeed an issue with the rain.

Mine is AMD too, I did not see anyone reporting it on Nvidia?!

Good point. I deleted the mentioning of Nvidia. Testing and reading discord at the same time is tricky 🤪

Actually that makes me wonder if it is AMD related. It would be interesting to know if this happens on Nvidia too.

I found a way to reproduce this problem but i need to investigate more.

I've been noticing stuttering while panning during gameplay, even at 3x speed and in the sun, and I wanted to mention that here

image.jpg

I get lows down to 4 in rain and even saw a low of 0fps while panning in sunny weather at 1x game speed, where the game froze for over a second. but I am averaging over 60fps

perhaps i should make a separate bug report? I assumed it was part of this bug but my issue seems to be panning over this area of my map with the game not paused drops my fps from 60 to single digits. should i make a report for this?

actually in this area it stutters on high performance. on the highest graphics settings the game runs at double the fps. I have another area that stutters at high settings though when scrolling in one specific direction, so i seem to have to pick. but putting the settings back to ultra fixed a lot of the stuttering i was having. it is reproducible, switching to low stutters in that area

The issue was tied to the combination of particle systems and high game speed multipliers (rain and loose storages for example).
Should be fixed in next patch.

I will say try it with the next patch to see if it helps. If not, then it's a different problem, which means you should make a new bug report and include a savegame

b566: I consider my original issue fixed.
I looked for the 1% resp. 99% fps without vsync, could not observe any stutter.
Thx!
