I tried experimental and did a small bug fix on a Map. Noone useing the stable version can use the Map now and I can't edit it in stable either anymore.
Any reason for the version dependence in the map editor or can we get a warning or downgrade?

experimental is often ahead in save version so saves won't be compatible, you will have to wait for stable version to catch up
Should at least show up in map list, even if greyed out, and say "Game version x required" or something.
Easier said than done, if the save format changes, the old game may not be able to read the save file, which was exactly the case here. Old game has no way of knowing what new save format is.
Maybe just add a warning in experimental or add a "created with version xx.yy" to the maps created as metadata?

One or two bytes of data added to the start or end of the .map file with the game version?
That way if you can't open the map file with the current version, you can at least show the map in the list and say "minimum game version x"
The confusion occurred because the map simply wasn't in the list at all, even though it was in the correct folder, and a bunch of experimentation had to take place to figure out exactly why.
