Stone gathering information

The problem: Most of the in-game suggestions about how to mine are fairly straight forward. When I realized I wanted to gather rock, I wasn't able to find anything inside the game that indicated the best (or any) way to do this.
Suggested change: Something that describes to players how to get started in that vein (Ha!) would be helpful. Either additional info in the page that talks about mining, or a tutorial step, or make rock/dirt something that shows up as a layer on the map view? Maybe make rock something more visible in the world? And perhaps a tutorial step to clear some surface rock or dirt to reach a buried resource?
I'm not sure what the best way to help with that is, but I would have appreciated more info than is currently provided.
