Planning mode is good in that it keeps things paused, but its functionality is moot if it actually places an entity that blocks transport. Making the entity "real" only when it receives its first materials would address this issue.
Make ghost buildings more ghostly (not block vehicles)
The planning mode is excellent for long complicated production chains. It allows you to move everything around (especially with the cut and copy features) until you like the placement. But much of this functionality is compromised in larger builds due to vehicles not being able to get to portions of the plan when building. I think it is feasible to put portions of the plan into production, allowing them to be built and then moving on to the next portion. Currently, we have to use unity to build the unreachable portions because you cannot travel through a plan.
My biggest issue with that are train tracks and maybe future coming roads.
I like to lay out these transport channels in my long-term planning early on, so that everything else fits around it.
Creating train track plans block vehicle movement and I have to remove chunks in between to let them pass, until they might be replaced by trains in future.
So maybe you can reconsider it with this new mechanics?
Think of it as an ability to plan out your level crossings in advance. If you don't want to /can't build them yet, just cut out the size of the level crossings you plan on using.
