Biomass is inefficient and poluting when directly burned, and will introduce problems that will require frquent maintnance due to ther chemical nature. Biomass processes is to adress these issues by pre-drying and then transform them into desired form. These technology inclue torrification, slow pyrolysis, intermediate pyrolysis, fast pyrolysis, gasification, and SRF (solid recoverd fuel).
Gasification is a process to transform any carbon-rich feed stock into syngas.
Commonly, the carbon source can be coal, coke, wood, daf (dried ash free) biomass and others.
Reaction toke place under reduced oxygen circumstance, about 15% to 35% of that required for complete comdustion. And at around 800°C to 1000°C, react for 1 to 2 seconds will yield 85% of gas product. Composed of carbonmonoxide, carbondioxide, hydrogen and methane.

Gasification is an awesome idea, but than pyrolysis for a more efficent biochar production could be added. Sideproduct would be tar and Fuel-gas with tar being kinda similar to heavy oil. This Process can not heat it self so it needs a good bit of power or a burner (fuel input possibility).
But gasification and pyrolysis is not only limited to Biomass, also to waste (less char, more tar und gas) and everything else that can be burned can be used as an imput (good example is coke-production from coal (pyrolysis) or pyrolysis of plastic waste to recover gas and oiles/tar which can be reused in the chemical industrie after cleaning for new plastics).
As a process engineer I was always facinated by this processes and would really like to see them in a game.
