Instead of an excavator magically sorting things like dirt from ore one scoop at a time and going directly into a truck, require a sorting plant. The processes for these would vary by the resource. Maybe instead of just slag, we have "iron slag" and a new machine we research later can get some ore out of it using acid, for instance.
