Post-Nuclear Power Sources

Since there are reactors that are proving the success of fusion-based reactions to produce energy, would it be possible to add a system that allows us to utilize hydrogen as a power source? Reactor waste product would be deuterium, which cannot be dumped into the world, but instead can only be used as a higher-end fuel for space-going craft (rockets, shuttles, etc).
Methinks this could tie in nicely as a prerequisite tech for those wanting space exploration to be added

Fusion reactor research and construction after launching rocket would be a great game end goal (or just another step to the captain's industry in space)
