Vehicle variants that use different fuels.

Fuel gas and ethanol would be good midgame sidegrades. With electric being a late game one.

Fuel gas is, so far as I can tell, natural gas/methane. Not a good vehicle fuel due to very low density: cargo ships only really get away with it by first liquifying it and abusing the square-cube law to keep evaporation losses minimal.
We already have recipes to turn ethanol and cooking oil into diesel.
