Silent crashes when switching to or from CoI

Player resolved Player setup Linux

Issue description

Random silent crashes occur. (CoI game just disappears, steam cloud sync starts) Were very rare, but more common since the latest update to 0.5.4 stable

the log in the Logs folder doesn't show anything; latest log ended halfway through a sentence during an autosave half an hour before the crash - probably the end of the log is sitting in a write buffer in bit heaven.

Reproduction steps

Play game (new game, old save, doesn't matter)
Go to another open application (game is in fullscreen borderless, multi-monitor setup) and the game might crash, but probably won't. Click back on the game, and it might crash then.

the Logs/logfile is attached. I just now found where the player.log is located. I'll try to recreate again and will attach to the issue.

Game version and build number

v0.5.4f (Update 1)

Operating system

Linux (Proton 8.0-3)
Kernel 6.4.11-zen2-1-zen

Got a new log from adding PROTON_LOG=1 %command% to the steam command. Hopefully there's something useful in there.

Another key to the puzzle.. The full command is
SDL_VIDEO_MINIMIZE_ON_FOCUS_LOSS=0 PROTON_LOG=1 %command%
so I can have borderless fullscreen on my left screen and work on the right.
I just noticed that if I Alt-Tab to and from it, nothing happens, but if I click on another running application, or click on CoI to return to the game, it pauses for a split-second, or 2 split-seconds before a crash. Let me see if I can locate that section of the steam log when it has a lag-pause...

Okay, just crashed again. But it seems I might just be able to avoid the crash if I remember to alt-tab to and from CoI.
EDIT: No, still crashes even with Alt-tab

For what it's worth, here's the new log:

This is a much smaller log - this time with the stutter when the game regains focus, but without the crash.

Thanks Jemsterr, thanks for providing the logs.

Could you see if this reply helps you with your issue?

Let me know!

Have not yet tried GE, but in the meantime I updated Nvidia drivers, kernel, and switched from Proton 8.0 to Proton Experimental.
Today was the first time testing, but the lag pause when switching is shorter, and although these entries are still spamming the steam log file:

The crash has not yet happened. Hopefully this is a good sign, but still testing. If it returns, I will test with GE.

Belay that. Crash looks the same, but maybe there's something in the logs that can help. Installing GE 8-13 now.

GE has the same crash, but doesn't have that one fixme spamming the logfile so I don't have to zip up the log to upload it now.

Confirming issue still present with update to Proton GE 8-16

Workaround found (No idea why I had not tried it)
Windowed mode does not crash when switching, although the fixme lines in the logfiles above are still present.
I will continue to test and see if anything new comes in the logs with each version of CoI or GloriousEggroll.

Correction. It just doesn't happen as often? Still crashed. Here's the latest log.

By running steam from the command line with the command $ steam 1>/dev/null, I was able to get the following output.
steam.console.log
which ends with the error:
(process:77829): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: 16:03:54.614: g_object_unref: assertion 'G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed

Note: That error in the previous comment also occurred when exiting by using the Quit button in the menu.

For testing, I have installed a Radeon 6600 instead of the Nvidia GTX 1650, and for 2 days, no crashes.
This almost confirms that the crashes are caused by some interaction with the Nvidia proprietary driver, the changes made to CoI shortly before I opened this Issue, and Proton.
The latest update to Glorious Eggroll (18) reduced the crashes to once every few hours, but they were still present until I switched to the Mesa and radeon-vulkan drivers.

Thanks for tracking this down to the Nvidia driver.
