researching fruit unlocks the recipe for cake, which requires sugar, sugar is only available with research 3
there's a contract to get sugarcane, but you can't use it without researching sugarcane first :(

Yeah, or cake can just be unlocked with Sugarcane research.
I doubt anyone is going to spend unity on contract for sugarcane just for the unity from cake
Well it would be fun if it was a thing of you can get the benefit early but need to set up contracts
fair enough i guess but i still think it could provide a benefit

isnt there also health benefit from adding one more food group?
Not for the "treats" category, that is pure unity only.
Also, treats do NOT count for decreasing food consumption of other food sources
They are a treat, not a substitute for a proper meal.
according to wiki https://wiki.coigame.com/Settlement#Demand_for_food its same category as others, has it changed recently?
i remember it was accurate for U2, but havent checked for U3 TBH

the benefit is unity, and the cost for contract is unity...
the benefit is (would be) providing treats to a city before unlocking plastic and snacks

...oh
oh huh, I guess I was told wrong then.
nvm then.
Though, providing more of other foods is almost always easier than proving cake to barely meet food needs
Yeah, cake is pretty difficult to get enough of, but it's also single most calorie dense and best unity per slot.
So there could be some logic behind making it accessable early if you were willing to do the trade
Yeah, precisely
Also motivates you to do more exploring and upgrade the ship
I suspect sugar cane actually requires next level of ship upgrades Vs fruit seeds
how much unity would the contract be? Would you come out unity positive at all?
I'd imagine it would be absolutely possible especially at lower populations
