Game switch settings windows mode

Hi,

the game keep changing my widows mode setting. The fullscreen in the setting only stay for some minutes and change to borderless.

First i was under the impression that i maybe hit the shortcut key for this but i check that it is not the case.

I found at last one trigger for this. If you save the game and close it and than restart it from steam and load the save the game has change the setting to borderless. I tested this problem i on 2 PC so it is likely not PC related.

Does this happen at the end of the loading screen?

McRib · 3 months ago

No it doesn't it.
but i narrowed it down even further if close the entire game and start it again than the borderless mode is active again.

so save or loading is not the cause

maybe a in proper closing or the game or start of the game cause it? (i exit via the esc menu) but still

It's a long standing issue, we disable VSync during loading and this makes Unity recalculate (incorrectly) the gfx settings.

McRib · 3 months ago

yeah i have fun with it since update 3 or so...

you get a big chocolate if you can fix it 😅

🤣

why disable vsync during loading?

To reduce loading times, VSync is synchronization mechanism (which means something has to wait for something else) and if you have some operation that can only be done on the main thread, you do some work and request the next frame (to keep the window from going "not responding" or updating the progress bar).
Sometime you only have a short job to do (1ms for example), if you have VSync enabled at 60FPS(16ms per frame), you have to wait 15ms (16-1ms) doing nothing waiting for the next frame to start.

I feel like this is nonsense but I don't have the experience or words to explain why.
I've never heard of a game needing to tie loading rate to frame rate.

i would just like to add to this after a bit of testing, sorry if this information is already known.

if you remove vsync from the fps limit options, and either go to "no limit" or the specific fps target numbers, change it to borderless and close and reopen the game it no longer starts in fullscreen.

i know this is a bug with vsync/fullscreen/borderless but honestly knowing i can just remove fps limits and it will not change off of borderless is pretty nice.

McRib · 3 months ago

I am sorry but i find you information missing some important facts.

First, It doesn't matter if you set your FPS to 60/30 or Vsync the problem is always here (so specific fps target cause this fullscreen to change to borderless as well).
If you have played the game without using vsync you get screen tearing and you will notice this right away. The only open i have is play the game unlimited FPS or play border less (which cause problems with the second screen) which remind me i guess i find a way around this by limiting the FPS with AMD software and see if that solve it 👍

if you have an AMD card, then you should be able to enable AMD Freesync in amd software display settings, which makes vsync settings unneeded and unnecessary

McRib · 3 months ago

thanks i forgot compley that i have this option on this screen

jockeril [discord] · 3 months ago

so basically it's "disable Vsync" in the game, but enable it in the GPU control settings/software - I think that can also be done with nVidia cards in its control software - even per game iirc in Windows, IDK about Linux though, but I'll check

One question - is screen tearing visable in how land edges get a greenish hue while the camera is moving when viewing the game map ?

McRib · 3 months ago

it is always very present in this game you will just notices it right away when you move the camera. Basicly this kind of game vsync need to be on it is just not good to see.

my screen is 1080p 60fps so I always set games with vsync on or fixed on 60FPS

anyway, I mostly use only one screen (rarely, I'd connect a second one) so it won't affect me as much if it's borderless or full screen, I think

McRib · 3 months ago

fixed 60 fps doesn't solved the tearing problem since it is timing issue between the screen and the gpu

so even if you set both to 60 fps you will get tearing

I always use borderless since I frequently alt-tab to different programs
