Did you remove the blast furnace recipe that uses mined coal and iron ore?

There is only iron ore and charcoal in this furnace.

Yes. This is mirroring real world more closely than the vanilla recipes.

Raw coal is not really usable in a real-world blast furnace as the quality, composition and stability of coal vary too much for a stable process. Until coke (from coal) took over, charcoal was the main fuel for iron production. In fact, deforestation to make charcoal for iron production at the start of the industrial revolution is the main reason Europe has almost no historic, natural forests anymore.

In game, if you are constrained for wood, you either stay with the open-hearth furnace until you can get to BF II, or you go the route via direct iron reduction.
