Roads

Planned New content Vehicles & Roads

I would love to see a buildable road system, here are some of my ideas that go along with it.
-make it tiered like start with sand trails and end up with highway like closed off roads with catchers on the side and lights and allow for intersections and elevated roadworks.
-bridges that can span water.
-make it so that you can choose to have vehicles follow the road network or not or be able to assign vehicles or vehicle groups to certain roads.
-Add some buildings that connect to the road like gas stations and storage warehouses.
-Trains?

I would LOVE to see roads added. Even if just cosmetic, one thing I love about these types of games is decorating. I do stand by the idea that roads should NOT be necessary, but should give bonuses like vehicle move speed & reduced maintenance so you do get a benefit. If I had a choice of behavior, I would suggest something that acts like a "building" that has 0 height (basically a re-texture of the dirt) so you could still build additional buildings over them. To construct them, you drag a rectangle (similar to mining designation) & trucks would deliver to the rectangles you drew. I like the idea of adding asphalt (made in a distiller) and having tiers for roads. At least at first, I suggest there be two types of roads: gravel and asphalt (concrete is rare irl). Gravel would take just gravel and asphalt would take gravel, sand, and asphalt. For truck behavior, I wouldn't even care if they didn't prioritize roads, b/c I can always build barriers/buildings to funnel trucks to the road.

The ability to reserve space for vehicles to travel through use of laying roads would be great. Bonus if you can set the height that you want the road to reserve and that sets a height safety bar every so far for decor and function.
I have built a complex too many times only to realize I forgot to plan for truck access.

Different tiers of roads, speeds, one way direction, basic roads, highway, urban, 1, 2, 3 lanes in each direction, bridges, fuel station integrated in roads, stops with shopping, drivers get tired, oops too much allready. Some industry to deliver products just like the settlements.

Upvoting would love to have proper roads with the option for automatic lane markings. Elevated roads would be awesome too to allow for custom bridges.

This should have been done Long before trains. Also trains are too broken to use currently. And we really need train signals.
Roads first!

the best will be to design roads like the train tracks with curves,, and once the vehicles get on the road the follow the road pathing system. will give a more true feel of traffic. and to intersections where gravel roads meet asphalt roads.. and an option to only allow certain vehicles on certain roads will be nice like a type of line manager like trains

Agreed, however it should be a split/upgradeable research. Low-tier roads early on, and advanced roads with larger buffs late game. Trucks should prioritize roads when possible, but still have the AI pathfinding that already exists. Alternately, an option in the settings unlocks when researched that allows players to toggle between normal pathfinding, mixed pathfinding, or strictly adhere to roads (best for late game factories). An additional early-tier road type of chip seal could be added too, using gravel and bitumen/tar at a cheaper cost than a full asphalt road for less used routes. Another additional road type, composite roads, in the late game requiring multiple steps of manufacturing (road basing (dirt and gravel mixed in the mixer), concrete, then asphalt (gravel, sand, and bitumen/tar, and possibly RAP) providing additional reduction of maintenance and a speed buff for vehicles traveling on it (used commonly on major US interstate highways in high traffic/urban areas)

Instead of increasing vehicle speed, roads could provide fuel efficiency and reduced maintenance. This would reward building proper transport infrastructure while improving operating efficiency, without creating pressure to redesign logistics around speed differences.
